Introduction

In March 2021, London (UK) based multinational consumer goods company Unilever reported that it had reduced its operating costs by $1.5 billion by following sustainable sourcing since 2008. This was revealed in the company’s Full Year 2020 Results and Strategic Refresh report. Alan Jope (Alan), CEO, Unilever, claimed that investments in sustainability resulted in long-term savings. The report claimed savings from the resulting "green electricity" procurement contracts were encouraging and Unilever's goals for using renewable electricity in its operations had been achieved a year ahead of schedule. Higher crop yields resulting from sustainable agricultural practices had yielded similar cost savings. In addition, the company expected that its switch to recycled plastics would reduce costs over time and that the price of recycled plastics would eventually fall below that of virgin plastics..
